On 14th March 1915, the 2nd Royal Irish Fusiliers battalion of 82 Brigade, 27th Division, were in the line in the St Eloi sector on the southern part of the Ypres salient. At 5pm the Germans opened a violent artillery bombardment of their trenches after blowing a mine under the Mound, a heap of spoil from an old nearby brickworks . They then launched an infantry attack and captured the village.  At 2am the next morning, 15th March, 2nd Royal Irish Fusiliers and other battalions from 27th Division, launched a counter attack and retook St Eloi but were unable to recapture the mound. One of their casualties during these two days was Lewis Machin who was killed on 14th March.
